It's ok to have a rough day. It's ok to be depressed. It's ok to be angry, sad, or just "blah". We all have those days, and when they (inevitably) happen, we need to know what to do.

My journey through sobriety has not been easy at all. But my life gets better every day, because I've learned what to do on those rough days.

The first thing I do is pray - even if I'm mad at God, I pray. Sometimes my prayers take the form of total silence. God knows my heart, and there are times where there isn't much "good" in there. But I can honestly say that every time I've hit my knees, I feel much better when I stand up.

Other tricks include:

  • Take a walk outside, regardless of the weather. Just appreciate the day for what it is. 
  • Go to the gym and sweat it out. The hardest part is making yourself go. Once you're there, you'll remember why.
  • Be kind to someone. It can be something as simple as a heartfelt text message - just let someone know what they mean to you. It's nice to get out of your own head for a while.
