Edifying : instructive or informative in a way that improves the mind or character.
From day one, I was taught to "stick with the winners" and to surround myself with people who build me up. I was taught to read books and to always set high goals. My life is better today, because I now choose to surround myself with people who challenge me to do better. My pastor inspires me, my friends hold me accountable and don't pressure me to drink, and I do my very best to hang around people smarter than me.
But that's not it. Nope, that's just the beginning. It's of equal importance for me to edify the people around me. I need to go out of my way to encourage others, to be a friend, and to be of service to every person I meet. If I'm always looking for what I can get out of a relationship or friendship, then I'm missing out on the very thing that makes me better: giving.
As you go about your day, think about what edifies you, and most importantly, how you can edify others. What is it that makes you better? Who are the people in your life that make you strive for better? What can you do or say to build someone up today? We're all human, and that means we all like to be edified.
"Lord, I need wisdom. Please calm my spirit and help me to forget about yesterday. I know you have forgiven my past, and you've given me the gift of today. Thank you. May I use today to make your kingdom greater. When a stranger walks my way, I pray that you would fill my heart with a smile. That I may be a walking example of your redeeming grace. I pray that the right people would enter my life, and that you would guide every step of this day. Amen."
