Ok. I was just minding my own business, replying to some messages....when Ziva, my dog, walks up to me with that look in her eyes.
We've spent several years together - I know her every mannerism, and she knows mine. We can communicate almost entirely without words. She gives me the look that means, "Dad, I really gotta go." So...I drop what I'm doing, take her outside, and sure enough...she has to poop. She finished pooping, and she looked up at me with a look of pure satisfaction and relief, as if to say, "Thank you, dad!" Maybe it's weird that I talk to my German Shepherd like a person haha, but I looked down at her and lovingly said, "Of course you had to poop. I knew it. I'm your daddy. All you had to do was ask, baby girl."
And then boom. That's when the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart:
"Zack, I'm just waiting for you to ask. I'm just waiting for you to ask. You think I wait 'til the last minute, but it's you. You're the one that waits 'til the last minute to ask me! You wait until everything is on the line - until you just gotta have it! And of course I'm gonna release it. I love nothing more than taking care of you, Zack, but you have to let me know. You have to give me that look and let me know you're ready for it. Let me know that it's something you need - something you depend on me for!"
See, my dog has to ask me to let her out when she really needs to go. Her wanting to go doesn't help her situation. She can desperately want to go out, but I'm the only one who can open the door for her. I'm her dad. Until she gives me that look, I'm going to assume she doesn't need it.
And that's what God wants to do - He wants to give you the desires of your heart, but you have to ask. And please note, it's gotta be good, not selfish. God is pure and holy, and it's likely that your request for a million dollars is selfish. You have to know the difference between wants and needs. Ziva wasn't just asking me for fun, she was asking me because she needed to go out!
I'm a good dog dad, but I'm not just waiting around all day wondering if she needs to pee or poop. Sometimes, she has to let me know what she needs. Same with God. He cares, and He cares deeply. Like any good Father, He wants to connect with you. A huge part of connection is asking.
I hope this speaks to you!!!! Much love. -Zack
